Aloe Vera as a topical application for minor burns and other skin ailments has been used since time immemorial. It was considered to be auspicious to keep a pot of Aloe Vera plant on your kitchen window sill. Ancient Egyptians used this plant to soothe their skin. This plant originates in Africa and is also known as the lily of the desert. The versatility of this ubiquitous herb can hardly be emphasized enough. It is supposed to soothe minor skin irritations, heal first degree burns and makes the facial skin soft and smooth.
It can be used raw, that is just break a leaf and take out the fleshy part. Apply this gel directly to soothe rashes, burns or dry skin problems. This herb comes as a spray, gel and is also mixed in creams and skin potions to create skin softening creams and lotions. There are about 500 species of the plant all over the world. Extracts of Aloe Vera can also be consumed internally in the form of juices and capsules. It is non-toxic and it is not a drug neither is it intended as a replacement to any drug.
Its claims to health and beauty benefits are known worldwide. Beauticians always stock their beauty counter with gels and lotions that contain Aloe Vera. It has been used for centuries as a topical application for minor sunburns and to heal wounds. Research has also proved that the gel has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. It can help in alleviating minor skin problems like rashes.
Research is on to discover Aloe Vera’s ability to boost immunity. The western medicine science recommends the use of Aloe Vera in relieving heartburns and ulcers. The latex also is a wonderful laxative.
Aloe Vera improves the function of the liver and also has anti-aging properties. It is a completely safe product but many people feel mildly allergic to this product, particularly, when they consume the juice of Aloe Vera. Long term use of Aloe Vera as a laxative can cause the loss of potassium from the body.

Here is my personal experience with aloe vera. A friend gave me a cutting and I planted it. Since we live in San Diego with the perfect weather for aloe, it grew into a huge plant. One day I was mountain biking the day before a big convention. Unfortunately I had a “face plant” wherein my face hit the ground and a big gash was opened. I was afraid it would leave a bad scar, not to mention I was supposed to go to this convention which featured some prominent celebrities. I used the aloe vera every morning and evening on my face. Within a couple of days the gash had improved vastly. It was still very noticeable, but I wasn’t afraid to be seen in public, and I had photos taken with Kirsten Dunst and Anne Rice which I still prize, today.

Hi Patty,
Thanks for sharing that interesting experience. I once had a skin allergy where my skin would become red. Direct application of aloe vera helped in soothing the irritation. I also found aloe vera gel ( the cosmetic version) for hair extremely useful. Unlike other gels, it does not affect the texture of the hair, that is they remain smooth, and also stay in place and give you the gel look.
