We all are concerned about the environment and want to be a part of the green movement. We wish we could contribute in some way to preserve the environment. The harm caused to our environment as a direct consequence of the green-house-effect is a well-known fact. We all see our water resources polluted with industrial waste and effluents and wish  we could do something to prevent this. Well, you can! start your own social group; meet once in a while; plant trees and take care of them. Make a group and try to clean up a particular area. You could even educate your local social group about the importance of a green heritage for the next generation.

Here are a few pointers on how you could create your own green space whether at work or at home.

  • Carry your own mugs do not use disposable cups.
  • Avoid printing till it’s a must and try using both sides of the paper.
  • Try using public transit systems or try car pools.
  • Keep your car in good condition to save on fuel and reduce emissions.
  • If you see people spitting and littering in public places educate them and you will find that others will soon join you in the cause.
  • Always ensure that your fridge door is closed to save energy.
  • Allow hot food to cool before putting in the refrigerator.
  • Cover all vessels while cooking to save fuel.
  • Use smaller pots when you are cooking for 1 or 2 people
  • Change outdoor bulbs to LED which requires even less energy than CFLs.
  • Wash dishes in a tub instead of under running water.
  • When ordering food from outside ask them not to include paper napkins and plastic utensils.
  • Use green waste to make compost.

Some interesting  facts about the environment:

  • If about 25% of families used 10 fewer plastic bags we could save about 2.4 billion bags a year.
  • Every ton of office paper that is recycled can save up to 380 gallons of oil.
  • 70% of  the earth is covered by water but 97.5% of that water is salinated water.
  • Using a diswasher can save water as dishwashers use 11 gallons of water for a wash and manual wash requires 16 gallons of water.
  • Taking a shower consumes less water as compared to taking a bath in a tub or using a bucket.
  •  Al Gore, ex Vice President and Noble Laureate wrote a book called The Inconvenient Truth. He has founded the Alliance for climate protection, an environment awareness group that   focuses on the need to create a global awareness on the climate crisis.

Interesting post. Energy saving does vary from country to country. Planting trees north of your house can shelter it from the cold north winds in some countries. Shower instead of a bath? That depends in England. I take a bath and the water is heated by gas, I take a shower and it’s heated by electricity which is produced inefficiently from gas! There isn’t much difference. Insulation and draught proofing is important to me because this is a cold country for most of the year. I have loft insulation, all the doors are draught proofed, windows sealed, cavity in the wall is insulated and the boiler is fairly new and efficient. In other countries keeping cool is a problem; to reduce energy consumption on air conditioning - use a fan to circulate air around the house.

Keeping travel to a minimum is good, home working should be encouraged. the number of people who commute to cities around the world to sit at desks using expensive city office space when they could work better in a Home Office is ridiculous. Air travel may seem a right but is actually a luxury now and people in the UK will have 3 or 4 overseas holidays a year. One good holiday every few years would be better.

You can tell I’m a writer, I can’t even write a short comment!

Good luck with your writing, enjoy it. Michael.
