Whenever some shiny new playthings appear on the market, people always wonder one question: is it a gadget or a gimmick? Have you heard about the cell phone watch? Though it is known by some people, it is not much popular all around the world. It is still a new plaything for many people. You must want to know the answer of the question, is the cell phone watch a gimmick.

A cell phone watch is a wrist watch that doubles as a cell phone. The world’s first cell phone watch was a Samsung SPH-WP10 in 1999. The newer cell phone watches are made by LG, Samsung, Swap, and Phenom. The newest models support mp3, mp4, touch screen, and websurfing with 3G.

You can make calls just by tapping on the face of the cell phone watch. It’s pretty awkward, but it comes with a bluetooth headset which does at least make it easier to receive calls. It’s not really a smartphone - you can’t, for instance, surf the web or navigate your way around town with it, but it does have video calling.

Of course the video calling helps the cell phone watch achieve what must be its primary aim - to make the wearer feel like a rather retro action hero from a spy movie. James Bond? The Saint? Or maybe Austin Powers?

But I can’t help feeling that anyone seen staring at their chunky LG wristwatch as they make a call is more likely to be a figure of fun.
